Let me tell you a little more… I discovered Tango by chance 11 years ago when a friend invited me to join her at a Milonga and just for the fun of doing something different I agreed though a little reluctant because it was seen as an old fashioned tradition. What I didn’t know was that I was about to discover a complete different world driven by the passion of those who follow their hearts and share the love for this antique but unique dance. I had seen my parents dance tango at parties but never danced myself; my first night at a milonga I just observed people flow around the room and left knowing I had to try that! I started taking lessons and going deep into Tango roots, and suddenly discovered I was crazy about it; each dance is exceptional and the feeling for me is like falling in love with your partner for 3 minutes [the length of the song] the bodies are one and you just have to let go and glide together in an integral harmony – body, mind and soul. It also opened my mind to a world guided by its own values and codes; where everyone is very respectful and there is no discrimination. I invite you to explore it together with us Cynthia Lowe Picture of me dancing? Our Obsession Our obsession is to share the real tango with people visiting Buenos Aires, not just a fictitious show prepared for tourists. We want you to be a dancer not a spectator. CV Our Services What do we provide? A distinctive experience – the true adventure of Buenos Aires. A tango tour with lessons and dancing in a Milonga; this is a genuine experience offered by a “local milonguera”, who knows, respects and follows the local Tango “codes” of conducts and behaviours, which makes this an exceptional experience. My associates and I are passionate tango dancers “milongueros and “milongueras”, who wish to pass on the experience to those who have never thought they could be dancing tango, with the locals in their own dance halls called “Milonga”. We live and breathe Tango. It is our hobby and passion. We know what is possible and not possible. We understand the rules and customs of local tango dance halls and ensure your experience to be the best it can possibly be as real as it can be for the novice tango dancer. A Tango class to help… Is an easy way to do something that might seem difficult for many people. To get you dancing in no time you need a private Tango class with our experienced dancers assisted by qualified instructors. You will feel confident and ready to try Tango!! The unique experience of the local Milongas – Tango Night Clubs We take you to Milongas in different neighbourhoods where you can touch and feel the Tango lifestyle in the most beautiful locations across the city. Here you will have the opportunity to see the talented, but little-known Milongueros, dance in their elegant and sensual way, night after night; some are teachers, some are local dancers who are known for their own style, some just come to dance, others to be with their lovers. It is all a rich melting pot of dance, harmony, elegance and sensual rhythm. A personal Tango Partner We guarantee that you will get to dance because we will provide a personal Tango Partner accompanying you to the Milonga. The milongueros are very careful who they dance with, they need to see that you can dance before asking you. If you went alone most probably no-one would ask you to dance because they haven’t seen you perform. Tango Codes One of the most remarkable characteristics are the codes that dancers follow and fully respect Men & Women – are not seated together unless they are a couple, if dancers see you in the table with someone (opposite sex) they will assume he/she is your partner and will not ask you to dance. Sharing tables - you are assigned a table and nobody can sit at your table unless you invite them; this means that dancing with someone does not imply having to stay all night with this person, unless you want to ? Never sit in someone else’s table, specially if it is the opposite sex. You can be very polite and say hello to people, even kiss them but never ask someone to ask you to dance. Maybe the dancer is a gentlemen and will do as he is asked, but he will never ask you to dance again. Have patient and wait, maybe he will ask you to dance. Asking for a dance – the reason for men and women being seated separately is due to the particular way of asking for a dance men ask women to dance with a look – a certain glance, movement of the head toward the dance floor When you are invited to dance, wait till your dancer is in front of your table, never get up and go to him, because he could have invited someone sitting beside you, or behind you and he could ask you to sit down. Be careful who you share your desire to dance with someone, because you never know who you are talking to. When you are dancing, it is better to close your eyes, not only you can concentrate and feel the music better, but not to feel distracted by the look of another man sitting at a table who afterwards might not ask you to dance because he may think that you could do the same to him. Be careful with the length of your steppes, it depends on how many people are on the dancing floor. The more people, the shorter the steppes. It is different when people are performing on their own, they have the dancing floor for themselves. Try not to walk around the dancing floor when people are dancing, wait for the Cortina, when everybody sits down. Try not to say hello to someone sitting down when you are dancing, your partner can get annoyed or jealous. If you have come into the milonga on your own, try and leave on your own. Specially if you pretend to go on dancing. If you come to the milonga with someone and you sit at the same table, it will take some time for the others to realise if you only want to dance with your partner or you are available to dance. That does not mean that you will be asked to dance by the same dancer that where inviting you before. Remember tango is always seducing. Never show too much interest in dancing with one special dancer, because you can not hurt others feelings, and maybe next time in the milonga your special dancers are not there and you have no one to dance with, as the one you rejected last time wont ask you to dance. You can only dance 2-3 tandas with the same dancer during one night. Even though you die to dance all night with the same dancer, remember everybody is watching. Do not show too much passion for someone when dancing, do not get to close. Yes you can show passion while you are dancing, your face can show how much you are really enjoying, but never get to intimate with the dancer if you don’t want a relationship. Depends how you respect these codes is what others will feel towards you, and how you will be considered and respected in the milonga. Don’t get offended if one of your tango dancer one night does not ask you to dance, there will be other nights. Tango There is quite a debate regarding the creation of Tango, though we do know that it started in the river bank area; people used to dance in the streets and bars. There are a number of theories about the origin of the word Tango. One of the more popular in recent years has been that it came from the Niger Congo languages of Africa. Tango comes from African slaves’ candombe, the Cuban habanera and European folk dances and a large Italian influence. There were no specific authors and had no lyrics. It was even considered obscene because of the way the couples tangled their legs while dancing. During the first two decades of the 20th century the original harp is replaced by the Spanish guitar and the bandoneon appears as the principal instrument. Here Tango’s voice rises. There are not much testimonials or records from this period known as the Guardia Vieja. You will hear that Argentine high society rejected Tango, but this is not real because they were the ones who were able to but the discs and musical scores. Tango was accepted to a greater or less extent by all social sectors in Buenos Aires. In 1910 Carlos Gardel lands in Paris where the first European Tango craze took place; while in Buenos Aires Tango began to move from the dark side of town to elegant dance palaces such as Palais de Glace and Corrientes Avenue and most porteños turned into expert dancers. This period is known as Guardia Nueva and it’s the Tango danced today. In the 30’s the first orchestras where formed; Juan D´Arienzo and Aníbal Troilo created great versions such as La Cumparsita, which became world known. Later in the 50’s Astor Piazzolla arose, he was one of the most remarkable Tango musicians who was rejected by the orthodox tangueros of the Guardia Vieja due to his innovations on rhythms. Due to this he went to France where he became world-known. Today his talent is honored; in all Tango Shows you’ll find one of his tunes. With the 60’s came the Rock and Beatles revolution and Tango was left behind, though it not die it just returned to it’s original habitat, the lower classes neighborhoods. Types of Tango There are two classes of Tango dance, Tango Salon the original milonga style danced in Milongas versus the Stage Tango; this is a choreography put together for artists to perform on stage with more athletic moves that the Tango Salon. The Stage Tango was created by Juan Carlos Copes and María Nieves who traveled the world showing their classic Tango Argentino Show. The Milongas are the Tango Night Clubs where people get together to dance Tango in it’s three styles: Tango, Vals y Milonga Milongueros are the attendees to the Milongas, they usually go every night and even more than one per night. They choose the Milonga depending on the attendee’s performance level and style, timing, and age group. Milongas can vary from elegant to informal, but the only thing that really matters is people’s motivation to dance and they performance level. During the past decade Tango occupied a distinguished place among the world dances. Tango in Buenos Aires remains very popular, combining its beautiful music, poetics and nostalgic lyrics. It is the passion and sensuality of two bodies being one that makes Tango so contagious and enjoying. Buenos Aires yearly hosts the two most important Tango festivals: Festival de Tango de Buenos Aires and Tango World Championship.
